Wisbech Business & Professional Mens Club - 2016

December 2016

 

48 members and guests enjoyed a three course Christmas dinner at Mendis  Wisbech and were welcomed by Chairman Michael Bates. We were entertained by an excellent cockney comedian Gary Kemsley who was thanked on behalf of the Club by Terry Roughton.

The first ten bowling competition was won by Brian Kett for the men and Beth Wilson for the ladies. This event was organised by David Patrick and will become an annual event.

Chris Lynn was inducted as a new member and presented with a club tie badge and membership card.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday January 11th 2017 when Martin Eggett will be inducted as our new Chairman.

November 2016

 

Chairman Michael Bates welcomed 32 members and guests to the Mendis Restaurant. The speaker was Mike Burns displaying audio visual shows. The first show was of a wonderful  South Africa and then showed one from members of the Wisbech Camera Club. Others were of Skating of the Fen’s and Time to warm up. The last one was B to C which was Boston to Cromer and could also have been Birds to Cookies. David Hodgson then thanked this special night of Mike Burns who has turned out to be very special member of this club.

 

The next meeting with a Christmas dinner on Wednesday December 14th. at Mendis with Gary Kemsley a professional Cockney Comedian

 

October 2016

 

42 members and guests attended the club meeting held at The West End Restaurant Wisbech and we're welcomed by Chairman Michael Bates. It was announced that the successful grand ball held on Saturday 8th October raised £840 towards the Chairman's chosen charity Wisbech Alzimers Society with a further £880 raised for the same charity at the successful Golf Day held in September.

 

The guest speaker for the evening was Steve Daley who played for Wolves and Manchester City. Steve was the first £1.5 million footballer in Europe. During his playing days with Wolves he played with our own

Jackie Gallagher. He later went to America where he played with such names as George Best Pele, Johan Cruyff and Frans Beckenbauer. He returned from America and played for Walsall. Today he works for a

National Brewery Company and is known for one of  the best after dinner speakers in the UK. He was thanked by our Vice Chairman Martin Eggett.

 

Date of our next meeting is Wednesday November 9th when our guest speaker will be Mike Burns.

 

 

September 2016

 

27 members and 2 guests attended the September meeting. Before the meeting commenced a minutes silence was held in memory of Colin Perkins who has been a club member for many years. Tony Reddy was inducted as a new member of the club and presented with his badge, tie and members handbook.

The guest speaker was Richard Barnwell who talked on antiques. Members were very impressed with Richard and look forward to him returning next year. 140 members are booked to attend this years Grand Ball on October 8th. The Golf day was a success with £880 raised through sponsorship and a raffle for the Chairman's Charity. 12 members attended the Go Karting day at Swaffham where they all had a very enjoyable day.

The date of the next meeting  is 12th October at The West End Restaurant, Wisbech when the guest speaker will be Steve Daley the former Manchester City and England footballer

August 2016

 

30 members and guests were welcomed to the August meeting held at Mendis, Wisbech by the Chairman, Michael Bates. Jeremy Pallant was inducted as a new member of the club and presented with his badge, tie & members handbook.

The guest speaker for the evening was David Johnson, a freelance scriptwriter and film maker. The talk was very interesting with regards to local film-making and related topics. This was David's first public speaking talk and he was congratulated and thanked on behalf of the Club by David Hodgson.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 14th September when the guest speaker will be Richard Barnwell.

 

July 2016

 

38 members and guests were welcomed to the July meeting held at Mendis, Wisbech by the Chairman, Michael Bates. During the meeting it was announced that only two tables were left for the Grand Ball.  Mike Bucknor was inducted as a new member of the club and presented with his badge, tie & members handbook.

The guest speaker for the evening was Dave Boy Green known locally as The Fen Tiger. Dave gave a very amusing and entertaining talk on his life as a professional boxer. He had in total 41 fights gaining 37 wins of which 29 were in the distance. He was managed by Andy Smith who was also his mentor. Dave was European Champion Twice and fought 2 World Title Fights losing to in his opinion the best fighter he ever fought Sugar Ray Leonard who had the hardest punch of all fighters in his career. After leaving the sport Dave became Chairman of a very successful packing company. He is retired to day but spends a lot of time opening fetes, talking to children and raising money for charity for which he was presented with an MBE. He was thanked by Terry Hawkings on behalf of the club.

The date of the next meeting is Wednesday August 10th when the guest speaker will be David Johnson as freelance Film Maker & Script Writer.

 

June 2016

 

Michael Bates, Club Chairman, welcomed 38 members and guests to the June meeting held at Mendis, Wisbech. He announced that a successful Chairman At Home Luncheon had been held at The West End Resturant, Wisbech. The Boat trip on the Broads scheduled for Friday August 12th has now been sold out. To date over 120 tickets have been booked for the Grand Ball and the Annual Golf day in September has a record 13 teams playing.

The guest speaker for the evening was Vicky Ford MEP who prior to our meeting was on BBC Look East. Vicky spent over an hour talking about the EU and gave her reasons for deciding to stay in it. Vicky is one of 7 MEP'S representing the East of England. Although she stated that Europe was not always perfect  it was important that we have a voice at the table to represent our region and country. She explained that the MEP job was different to her previous Westminster job. Members then asked many questions both for and against to continue in the EU with immigration being the main subject, as it has a tremendous effect on our town and region.

Members left at the end of the meeting still uncertain about the EU and all will cast their vote on 23rd June. Vicky was thanked on behalf of the club by Mike Burns. The date of the next meeting is Wednesday July 13th when the guest speaker will be Dave Boy Green the former undefeated Boxer.

 

 

May 2016

 

Michael Bates, Club Chairman, welcomed 24 members and 1 guest to the club meeting. The Speaker, Professor Lloyd Peck from the British Antarctic Survey, gave the Club a entertaining evening ably aasisted by Mike Burns.  

 

61 people have booked for the Boat trip on the Broads on 12 August and the function is now sold out.

 

The Golf Day on the 8 September is now a sell out with regards to teams and those attending the meal. Rick Wilson would be grateful to hear from potential hole sponsors.

 

Grand Ball 8 October 2016. Bookings still being taken. Entertainment to be provided by The Motor City Vipers.

 

The guest speaker on the 8th June 2016 will be Vicky Ford MEP who will be travelling direct from Belgium to talk and discuss the issue of the EU Referendum.

 

April 2016

 

Michael Bates, Club Chairman, welcomed 36 members and 6 guest to the club meeting at Mendi's, Wisbech. The Speaker, Jay McGee, gave the Club a brilliantly entertaining evening and was thanked by a standing ovation. 

 

The Chairman at Home function on the 22 May 2015 is now a sell-out. A raffle will take place at the event.

 

52 people have booked a coach seat for the Boat trip on the Broads on 12 August. 5 other are getting to the venue under their own steam. There is therefore space available on the boat but they will need to liaise with Michael Bates as to transport.

March 2016

 

Michael Bates, Club Chairman, welcomed 26 members and 1 guest to the club meeting at Mendi's, Wisbech. The guest speaker, poet Toby Wood, was well received.

 

44 members and guests are confirmed for the Chairman at Home function on the 22 May 2015, but there is space for more.

 

Likewise 46 people have booked a coach seat for the Boat trip on the Broads on 12 August, but there is limited space for more on the coach. Members and guests, who have booked, can of course travel to the broads under there own steam.

 

10 teams have so far booked for the Golf Day on the 8 September. There is room for a further 2 teams.

February 2016

 

Michael Bates, Club Chairman, welcomed 30 members and 1 guest to the club meeting at Mendi's, Wisbech.

 

The Club has received a letter of thanks from the representatives of the Trafford Ward who were very grateful for the large donation, which will be used to purchase equipment.  Once the equipment has been purchased they will advise the Club accordingly and no doubt a photo opportunity will arise at that stage.

Gordon Smith gave a talk about the FA Cup involvement by Wisbech Town Football Club was very warmly received and it is anticipated that Gordon will be asked to give a more enlightening talk possibly during 2017.

A number of members have yet to pay their annual subscriptions and reminders have been sent out.

The Chairman at Home which had been planned for 15th May has now been rescheduled for 22 May due to the highly acclaimed entertainer being double booked.

 

January 2016

 

Rick Wilson, Club Chairman, welcomed members to the Clubs' Annual General Meeting at Mendis, Wisbech. Members stood in silence for one minute to remember Gerald Salter who was a founder member of the club.

Richard Wilson, the outgoing Chairman, thanked members and his committee for what he described as a successful year of office. His charity Trafford Ward, North Cambs Hospital raised £1,617.00 which will be presented at the February meeting.

Michael Bates was inducted as the new Chairman for 2016 and he in turn inducted Martin Eggett as his Vice Chairman. The following additional members were elected to serve for 2016 in the capacities shown;

The new Chairman, Michael Bates, told members present he was looking forward to an exciting year with guest speakers already booked for most of the year. On May 15th he will be holding a Chairman At Home Function at The West End Restuarant with a Sunday Carvery Lunch and entertainment by Nicole who appeared on Tv's X Factor. On August 12th a boat trip on the Broads with a buffet and entertainment is booked. The Annual Golf day will be held during the first week of September and the Annual Grand Ball is booked for Saturday 8th October at The Wisbech Community Centre with dancing to The Motor City Vipers
